6th grader immunizations
Parents of current 6th grade students will soon be receiving a letter if their child is out of compliance for immunizations for students entering the 7th grade for the 2014-2015 school year. You will only receive this letter only if your child is out of compliance.

The requirements for student entering 7th grade are:
*Tdap: One dose withing the last five years
*Varicella: Two doses or documentation of chickenpox
*Meningococcal: One dose

If your child is immunized during this school year please bring the record to Harrison.  If you wait until the summer please take the record to the junior high.

The WISD will be hosting a vaccination clinic at Dodd Elementary on May 1st from 5-7pm.  You will need to bring all of your child's vaccination records.  You may access your child's immunization record on Family Access from our main WISD website, www.wylieisd.net.

If you have questions please contact our school nurse, Melissa McKay, at melissa.mckay@wylieisd.net or 972-429-3308

PTA Spring Dance
The annual Harrison PTA Spring Dance will take place on Friday, May 2nd from 6-8pm.  We will have a DJ, games, prizes, and concessions for sale.  Students may purchase tickets during lunch on April 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, 17th, and 25th for $5.  Tickets bought at the door on May 2nd will be $7.  Click here for more information about the dance.  The PTA is also looking for parent volunteers to help with the dance.  There are several options to fit your availability.  Please click here for the volunteer signup page.
STAAR Testing
STAAR testing will take place in April.  5th graders will test on April 1st - Math, April 2nd - Reading, and April 24th - Science.  6th graders will test on April 22nd - Math and April 23rd - Reading.  We ask that parents avoid making appointments for these days so the students will not be disrupted during the tests.  Parents will be unable to join their child for lunch on these days and we ask that you avoid bringing them lunch as well due to unpredictable lunch times.  Students may bring their own lunch or purchase a hot lunch in the cafeteria as usual.  They may also bring a snack to eat during testing, but please, nothing sticky, messy, or wrapped in "noisy" wrappers. Water bottles are encouraged.

Cold and Flu Season
Greetings from Nurse McKay!

The temperature has fallen outside and we have rounded the corner into cold and flu season. While Influenza (flu) is the talk of the town, the basics in health and wellness are the same for all seasons! Here are the recommendations from the CDC for staying healthy when there are germs and viruses all around us:
  • Wash hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub
  • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze -- catch the cough; then wash your hands
  • Try to avoid close cantact with sick people
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Be wise, immunize
When should your child stay home?
  • Temperature is 100 degrees or higher; CDC guidelines support staying home for 24 hours fever-free without fever reducing medication
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Unable to keep food and fluids down; stay home for 24 hours after vomiting and diarrhea have ended
Additional health information and recommendations can be found at www.TexasFlu.org or www.flu.gov.

If you have questions or concerns please contact Nurse McKay at 972-429-3308 or melissa.mckay@wylieisd.net.

Environmental Fundraising
Parents,

Did you know that you can do something great for the environment and help our school earn money at the same time?

Harrison participates in a fundraising program which collects empty printer cartridges and used cell phones to raise much needed funding.  Please help us by donating your empty printer cartridges and used cell phones.  Just have your child drop them in the collection bin by the office, then give yourself a pat on the back for helping your school and the planet!

This is an on-going fundraising effort so please remember to make donating your empty cartridges and used cell phones a habit.  Thanks in advance for supporting Harrison recycling efforts!

Allergies, Cold, and Flu...Ahchoo!
It's that time of year again when the sniffles start. But how can you know if it's allergies, a simple cold, or the dreaded flu? Check out the attached guide to learn the symptoms of each illness and whether or not your child should be attending school. And remember, the best preventions is to wash hands with soap and water often!
Harrison is very proud of our Buccaneers for their success on the 2013 STAAR tests.
Harrison Spirit Shirts
The Harrison PTA is selling Harrison spirit shirts which can be worn to school any day of the week. Students may also wear jeans on Fridays until Christmas Break if they are wearing a Harrison spirit shirt. The order form is located on the PTA link; please return order forms and payment to the school office. Checks should be made payable to HIS PTA and the student's name should be on the memo line. Orders will be filled on an ongoing basis throughout the school year.
